Daphne’s diary magazine reveiw

image

This magazine is set out like a visual diary and scrapbook which includes notes, letters, photographs and other things from Daphne. The content is varied and includes recipes, interior design, garden, vintage, DIY projects, outings and trips, shopping, poetry and some paper crafts for which materials are provided. This is an A4 magazine and is mainly made of unglossed paper and card apart from some materials provided for crafts which I think suits the vintage, shabby chic feel.

The scrapbook like layout of this magazine makes the design style very different to most other magazines available. One of the things I like most about the magazine is the way that every page does not have an organised layout, some pages have handwritten style notes and arrows and some have more traditional computer typefaces. The layout of the pages makes the information easy to read in small chunks.

This magazine also has a large focus on crafts as it contains many ideas for inspiration and also some which come with materials including some vintage style cones to eat snacks out of, homemade soap bars, lovely luggage stickers, a paper teacup and many more, there is a lot to keep readers entertained throughout the month.

One criticism towards this magazine would be that as every page has such a similar style and layout it can look a little cluttered with images that are not really needed,  so it would have been nice to have some pages with a larger amount of text on for when someone would like to spend a little more time reading.  Also I think some of the pages look to busy so less irrelevant images and a cleaner look to some pages would be good.

As someone pointed out to me I think this magazine may have taken inspiration from the book –‘A country diary of an Edwardian lady’ as the hand drawn title font on the front of the book is very similar to one used for titles throughout the magazine and also the painted flowers on the front of the book are also featured in some pages of the magazine.

Overall I think this is a good magazine as it has a range of content to keep readers entertained weather it be reading a review of a destination or getting creative with some materials provided. I think this magazine would appeal to a wide range of people and the vintage, shabby chic theme is quite popular amongst a range of ages. I think the price of the magazine at £4.99 is great value as it has a lot of content and is quite a large format. As it says on the front this magazine really is a full of inspiration and style for anyone who loves vintage, antiques, cooking,  home decorating and likes to be creative in their day-to-day lives.

Magazine Pastiche-BBC Good Food magazine

These are some magazine pastiches which I have created using Adobe In-design and the BBC Good Food magazine as my inspiration. I used the layout from the original and tried to match the fonts used as close as possible. I think this gave me a good understanding of how magazines are laid out using margins and grid lines as guides. I found out how important the layout of the type on the front cover is and how much the leading and tightness of the letters can affect the look.  One problem with these pastiches is that the background image used on the front cover was too light/dark in comparison to the text which made it hard to read. To solve this I tried to lighten or darken these parts in Photoshop however I still think some of the text is hard to read which would be unsuitable for an actual magazine. Also I think the double page spread would have looked better is my images included some people. Overall I think this exercise taught me a lot about the layout of the magazine and was a good exercise in learning how to use In-design as I had little experience with using this software.

Advertising campaigns analysis

1. EE

http://youtu.be/h7-rFEczCkg

-Throughout the advert suspense is built up as if it were a movie trailer for a horror film. When the audience is expecting something to jump out a clip of the famous ‘goat edition’ is played where the goat is screaming. This is a humorous advert which I think makes people keep watching to see what happens at the end.

-This TV/cinema advert is not recognisable with the brand until at the very end the EE logo is revealed. This does not advertise any products they sell but makes the audience more aware of the brand.

-I think this advert is targeted at younger people who are aware of the viral 'goat edition’ online videos however it would also appeal to a variety of people as it is humorous.

2. Costa

image

-I think this print costa advert would be used during summer months to draw in customers. The bright colours used have a happy feel, the images of the ice  and fruit would appeal to people on a hot day when they want to cool down and would draw passers by into the store. The fun phrase used also matches the image well again enticing customers. I think this advert has a generic audience as it would appeal to most people on a summer day. The company logo is used twice on the advert and is very recognisable with the popular brand.

3. Ben and Jerrys

image

-I think this advert is very recognisable with the brand as the well known logo is clearly shown on the bill board. I think the way the image of the ice cream tub with the scene inside is a very creative way of showing what ingredients go into the product whilst drawing peoples attention to the detailed scene. I think this advert is aimed towards existing customers as they are advertising a new range, the company is well known and want to make sure that they carry on buying products from the brand so they can compete with competitors.

4. Aldi

http://youtu.be/ooLUxGrN9MQ

-This TV advertisement is very unusual for a brand as they include products from well known brands in this series of adverts. The actors are a family who say they like both the branded and aldi product abd the price of the cheaper aldi alternative and branded product is shown on screen. At the end of the advert the 'squashed’ child reference is humorous for the audience whilst the characters on screen stay serious. The aldi  logo and catchphrase 'like brands only cheaper’ is shown. I think his advert would appeal to families, especially those looking to reduce costs. The children tasting the product show the audience how the products are very similar in taste and children will not be put off by the different brand. I think this advert would be very effective on families and encourage them to switch supermarkets.

5. Zoo

image

-This advertisement has been placed on a lamp post to look like a giraffe with the print along the post and two posters hanging either side with the giraffe head, zoo logo and phrase. This is an example of guerrilla advertising as it is very obscure and unordinary. I think this advert would appeal to children who would then ask if they could visit the zoo. I think the simple design of this advert is good as it does not need to contain much information.

These are some images I created on photoshop to show the layout of a front cover and double page spread in the bbc Good Food magazine. This helped me to identify key parts included in the page and how many of these have to line up.

These are some of the primary images I have taken for my Unit 3 Graphics project. For this project I have decided to create a baking magazine aimed at getting young people aged 16-25 interested in baking as the majority of current baking magazine are aimed at working adults, families and children and I have not found any aimed at my chosen audience. To do this I am going to give my magazine a modern, clean presentation which I think will help push me to do more digital work. I have chosen this audience as both my extended project and Unit 2 work last year were both aimed at family/children s had a similar style.

Magazine deconstruction-BBC Good Food

I think this magazine is aimed at anyone from the ages of 20 up who is interest in cooking and having a healthy lifestyle. The main contents of the magazine is recipes which are often quick, easy and budget meals to cook so this indicates the audience is people with busy lives such as parents, people working long days or students who do not have a lot of time on their hands to be cooking on a day to day basis. I think it could also be read by health conscious people as it contains a section on healthy recipes. Another indication this is aimed at parents is the ‘cook school’ section which shows meals for weekdays and how to get kids involved in the kitchen. The adverts in this magazines are varied and include food, drinks, cooking equipment, supermarkets, baby products and there is also special holiday deals for magazine readers. There was also leaflets included with the magazine for money off at a online supermarket as people reading this magazine will probably want to buy ingredients from the recipes. Another is for dog food and one for an animal charity which may indicate that a lot of readers have pets and care about animals. Overall I think this is a very varied magazine aiming mostly towards people with busy lives who also enjoy cooking. I think the adverts link very well to the type of person that would buy the magazine and would encourage them to buy the products advertised.

In todays graphics lesson we learnt about the significance of examining popular culture through magazines and understand the relationship between magazine content and consumer lifestyles. Some key points I learnt in this lesson were:

  • Examining magazines content and the advertisements they contain can show a variety of popular culture and past publications can also show cultural shifts.
  • Magazines  can be passed on between 5-15 people per copy. This means that even with sales of 200,000 copies the number of readers may be much higher.
  • Many rival magazines are often produced by the same company.
  • The cover page on a magazine is the most important as it what attracts buyers to the magazine whilst it is on the shelf.
  • There is said to be little room for experimentation and bravery in the magazine market.
  • Readers may buy magazines for inspiration, advice, to provide entertainment, read more about a shocking story or provide a source of information.
  • For publishers magazines generate advertising revenue and many don’t make any profit from the sale of the magazine as this may not even cover production costs.
  • Companies want to see high readership of a magazine if they are going to choose to advertise in it.
  • Market research about specific target audiences is important to find out what content should be included and the advertisements likely to appeal to them. If it is a new or existing magazines you could create an ideal reader to target your magazine towards. You may need to find out the age, gender, occupation, income, educational history, marital status and what leisure activities your readers like to take part in.

I found this lesson very informative and made me realise the importance of having such a specific target customer to appeal to.

Made some ice cream cone cupcakes yestoday, thought that they would look good photographed to put in my baking magazine!
